Taking a train to Tibet provides you the best chance to witness and enjoy the changes from the wide plains to the snow-capped mountains on the world highest Tibetan Plateau. There are scheduled trains to Lhasa from several major cities in mainland China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Lanzhou, and Xining. Check our detailed shcedule for referrence.
At the end of each car, there are two bathrooms(a Western toilet and an Asian toilet) and three public sinks for passengers. Nearby, there is a horwater dispenser which offers boiled water 24 hours on the train. See more details here.
On each train to Tibet, there are 2 Soft-sleeper Cars (64 berths in total), 8 Hard-sleeper Cars (480 berths in total) and 4 Hard-seat Cars (392 seats in total). And for such a long-time journey, we suggest you to choose sleeper cars for more confort and privacy.
There is one Dining car in each train to Tibet, offering three meals a day and some snack and drinks. You can also buy a box meal from a trolley, which constantly be pushing through the train. Learn more about the Dining car.
When passing Xining, the train follows the Qinghai-Tibet railway with the average altitude at 4300 m and the highest peak at 5300 m in Tanggula Pass. The train will start to spread oxygen into the cars after passing Golmud. And there are also individual oxygen outlet and onboard doctor for emergencies.
No matter where are you from, the most amazing attractions along Tibet Railway are all along the period from Xining to Lhasa. The continuous high snow-capped mountains are always by your side. You will be amazed by the peaceful Qinghai Lake. And only on the train, can you witness the endless grasslands inhabited by yaks, sheep, Tibetan antelope and other wildlife native to the Tibetan Plateau.
