Yigong National Geopark: Tibet's Hidden "Secret Garden" in Nyingchi

Sitting at an elevation of only around 2,000 meters, one of the lowest plateau areas in Tibet, Yigong feels less like the harsh highlands and more like a lush, sheltered paradise. Yigong National Geopark is situated in Bomi County. It lies approximately 160 kilometers east of downtown Nyingchi and is accessible via a turnoff from the famous G318 National Highway. From the central area of Bomi County, Yigong is approximately a 110-kilometer drive.

Get to Nyingchi:

Most travelers first reach Nyingchi before heading to Bomi. Multiple non-stop flights operate daily between China's major cities and Nyingchi. The closest airport is Nyingchi Mainling Airport, located about 50 kilometers from from the city center. From Lhasa, you can also take the high-speed train (approximately 3.5 hours), or a scenic 5-6 hour drive along the Lhasa-Nyingchi Expressway, which follows the beautiful Nyang River.

From Nyingchi to Yigong:

Private car or tour vehicle is the most practical option, as there is no direct public bus service to the Geopark area. The journey from Nyingchi (Bayi Town) to Yigong takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. You will travel east along the G318 National Highway, passing through the scenic Sejila Pass and Lulang Forest, making the drive itself part of the experience. If you have a flexible schedule, you can also consider visiting Lulang Town, the little Switzerland of Nyingchi.

From Bomi to Yigong:

If you are staying in Bomi County, Yigong is accessible via a scenic drive of about 2.5 to 3 hours. The road conditions have improved greatly, making it a smooth addition to any Nyingchi itinerary.

Extending for over 30 kilometers, Bomi Peach Blossom Valley offers a wilder, more primitive beauty compared to the manicured orchards elsewhere. The peach trees here are centuries old, with massive trunks and vibrant pink canopies that tower over the road. Driving through the valley feels like traveling through a pink tunnel, with traditional Tibetan houses scattered among the flowers and the looming, snow-covered glaciers serving as the ultimate backdrop.

Bomi Region Glaciers

Bomi is nicknamed "hometown of China's most beautiful glaciers" for good reason:

◎ Midui Glacier: One of Tibet's most accessible glaciers, located about 100 kilometers east of Bomi's central area along G318. The glacier's ice tongue descends through lush forest valleys, a rare and spectacular sight.

◎ Ranwu Lake & Laigu Glacier Group: Continue further east from Bomi to the stunning Ranwu Lake, gateway to the magnificent Laigu Glacier Group. Between December and February, explore the ethereal blue ice caves that form within the glaciers.

Guxiang Lake & Spruce Forest

Guxiang Lake offers a serene pause on your journey. It is best experienced by staying in one of the boutique hotels on the shore, watching the morning mist float over the water. Nearby, the Gangyun Spruce Forest was ranked as one of the "Ten Most Beautiful Forests in China." A hike here is not strenuous; it is a "forest bath" among towering spruce trees, some over 50 meters high.
