This sacred alpine lake sits at about 4,500 meters and remains one of Tibet’s more tranquil hidden gems. Its basin-like formation surrounded by peaks is said to resemble a treasure bowl. According to local tradition, high lamas have historically made pilgrimages here to pay respects to the lake, particularly during the 15th day of the sixth month in the Tibetan calendar. The water is framed by prayer flags and snow-capped mountains that create stunning reflections on clear days.

Basum-tso Lake 巴松措

Tibet’s first electrified railway connecting Lhasa and Nyingchi began operations in 2021, representing a remarkable feat of engineering through some of the world’s most challenging terrain. The high-speed train journey takes approximately 3.5 hours and offers its own unique perspective on the landscape, tunneling through mountains and crossing bridges above rushing rivers.

However, train schedules between Lhasa and Nyingchi are currently limited, with typically only 1 high-speed train and 1 normal train per day, and these don’t always align conveniently with typical tour itineraries.

Nyingchi Travel Tips

1. Best Time to Visit Nyingchi: Nyingchi is beautiful from March through November, with each season offering unique attractions. Tibet Travel Permit Required: All non-Chinese passport holders must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit (also called Tibet Entry Permit) before entering Tibet, and additional permits may be required for certain areas due to its proximity to international borders.
