Airports for Your Chengdu–Nyingchi Travel
Chengdu Shuangliu/Tianfu International Airport
Chengdu is served by two major airports, making it an excellent gateway to China and, specifically, Tibet. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is located about 16 kilometers southwest of the city center and has been a major aviation hub for decades. The newer Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), is located about 50 kilometers southeast of downtown and features state-of-the-art facilities. Nyingchi flights operates from both airports, so it’s important to confirm which airport your flight departs from when booking.
Nyingchi Mainling Airport
Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY) sits 50 kilometers from the city center, about 40-50 minutes by car. Nestled amid towering peaks and deep valleys, the approach rewards travelers with stunning aerial views of the Himalayas and the dramatic Yarlung Tsangpo River gorge. Shuttle buses run between the airport and Nyingchi Bus Station in downtown.

Future Option: Train from Chengdu to Nyingchi
Currently, there is no direct train service between Chengdu and Nyingchi. However, this will change once the ambitious Sichuan-Tibet Railway is completed. This engineering marvel, when finished, will connect Chengdu to Lhasa via Nyingchi, passing through some of the most spectacular and challenging terrain in the world.
Until then, train travelers must take the existing Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Chengdu to Lhasa (approximately 40+ hours), then transfer to the Lhasa-Nyingchi line. While this journey offers its own high-altitude vistas across the Tibetan Plateau, it takes significantly longer than flying and requires careful planning for the extended travel time.

1. Best Time to Visit Nyingchi: Nyingchi is beautiful from March through November, with each season offering unique attractions. Spring (March to May) is the most popular time, especially during the Peach Blossom Festival in late March and early April when valleys burst into pink blooms. Summer (June to August) brings lush greenery and pleasant temperatures, while autumn (September to November) offers crystal-clear skies and the best views of Mount Namjagbarwa. Winter can be quite cold with limited services.
2. Tibet Travel Permit Required: All non-Chinese passport holders must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit (also called Tibet Entry Permit) before entering Tibet, and additional permits may be required for certain areas due to its proximity to international borders. At Tibet Discovery, we handle all permit applications for our clients, so you don’t need to worry about the paperwork.
3. Altitude Considerations: While Nyingchi sits at a relatively comfortable 3,000 meters, you’ll pass through higher elevations when traveling from Lhasa. Stay well-hydrated, avoid strenuous activity on your first day, and consider bringing altitude sickness medication as a precaution.
4. Journey Preparation: The journey between Lhasa and Nyingchi takes several hours, so bring snacks, water, and entertainment for the ride. Layer your clothing as temperatures can vary, and pack rain gear if traveling in summer when afternoon showers are common.
