Midui Glacier
Type: Glacier, Forest Hiking
Best Time: All Year Round
The Experience:
Often hailed as one of the "Six Most Beautiful Glaciers in China," Midui offers a rare encounter where ice meets greenery. The adventure begins with a walk (or horse ride) through Midui Village. As you hike through the forest, the view suddenly opens up to reveal the magnificent glacier tongue descending all the way down. Seeing the dazzling white ice towering directly above the lush green woods is a visual shock you won't forget.

Bomi Peach Blossom Valley
Type: Scenic Drive, Flower Viewing
Best Time: Spring (Late March – Early April)
The Experience:
Extending for over 30 kilometers, this valley offers a wilder, more primitive beauty compared to the manicured orchards elsewhere. The peach trees here are centuries old, with massive trunks and vibrant pink canopies that tower over the road. Driving through the valley feels like traveling through a pink tunnel, with traditional Tibetan houses scattered among the flowers and the looming, snow-covered glaciers serving as the ultimate backdrop.

-
Laigu Glacier Group
Type: Massive Ice Field, Winter "Blue Ice" Adventure
Best Time: Deep Winter (Mid-Dec – Feb)
The Experience:
Beyond Ranwu Lake lies the massive Laigu Glacier, a group of six different glaciers connecting to form a frozen giant. In the deep winter, the water at the base freezes completely, allowing you to walk right up to the glacier's edge. This is the realm of "Blue Ice"—colossal walls of translucent, sapphire-colored ice blocks stacked against each other. Walking among these frozen sculptures feels like exploring an alien planet.

-
Ranwu Lake
Type: Alpine Lake, Reflection Photography
Best Time: December – April
The Experience:
Ranwu Lake is a place of two faces. In winter and early spring, when the glacial melt slows, the water settles into a deep, crystalline turquoise, creating a perfect mirror for the jagged, snow-capped peaks surrounding it. It is a photographer's dream of stillness and blue. (Traveler's Note: From late spring to autumn, the lake water often turns a milky grey or muddy color due to abundant glacial runoff.)

-
Yigong National Geopark
Type: Tea Plantation, Wetland, Bird Watching
Best Time: All Year Round
The Experience:
Hidden in a distinct micro-climate zone, Yigong is Tibet's "Secret Garden." It heralds the earliest spring in Nyingchi, where golden fields of rapeseed flowers bloom side-by-side with wild peach blossoms. Visitors can tour the world's highest tea plantation and enjoy the oxygen-rich air. In winter, the wetlands around Yigong Lake become a sanctuary for the Black-necked Crane, making it a hidden paradise for bird lovers.

-
Guxiang Lake & Spruce Forest
Type: Light Hiking, Nature Walk
Best Time: May – October
The Experience:
Guxiang Lake offers a serene pause on your journey. It is best experienced by staying in one of the boutique hotels on the shore, watching the morning mist float over the water. Nearby, the Gangyun Spruce Forest was ranked as one of the "Ten Most Beautiful Forests in China." A hike here is not strenuous; it is a "forest bath" among towering spruce trees, some over 50 meters high.

How to Get to Bomi
-
Bomi is located deep in the eastern Himalayas and does not have its own airport. However, it serves as a vital hub on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318). Reaching Bomi is now seamless thanks to the modern transport network centering around Nyingchi City, and the journey itself is a scenic highlight of the trip.
Flights to Nyingchi
For most travelers, the journey begins with a flight to Nyingchi Mainling Airport (LZY). This airport is well-connected to major Chinese gateway cities, with frequent nonstop flights from Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, etc. The flight itself offers a stunning aerial tour over the Himalayas. Upon landing in Nyingchi, you are just a few hours' drive away from the lush landscapes of Bomi.

Tains to Nyingchi
If you are already in Lhasa, the Lhasa-Nyingchi High-Speed Train is a revolutionary way to travel. The comfortable bullet train cuts the travel time down to approximately 3.5 hours. The railway line follows the majestic Yarlung Tsangpo River, offering window views of canyons, villages, and peach orchards. Once you arrive at Nyingchi Railway Station, our guide and driver will meet you for the overland connection to Bomi.

Drive to Bomi (Overland Connection)
The drive from Nyingchi to Bomi (approx. 4-5 hours) is considered one of the most beautiful sections of the legendary G318 National Highway. Far from being a boring transfer, this route takes you over the soaring Sejila Pass, where you might glimpse Mount Namjagbarwa, and pass the lush Lulang Forest. We provide comfortable, private vehicles and experienced local drivers to ensure you can stop safely at viewpoints and navigate the mountain roads with ease.

Bomi Weather & Best Time to Visit
Yigong in Spring
Mount Namjagbarwa in Autumn
Midui Glacier Hiking Trail
-
Unlike the harsh, dry climate often associated with the Tibetan Plateau, Bomi enjoys a mild, humid environment influenced by warm air currents from the Indian Ocean. This unique "micro-climate" makes it a comfortable destination year-round, with each season offering a dramatically different landscape.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is undoubtedly the most vibrant season in Bomi. While spring in Lhasa is still awakening, Bomi is already submerged in a sea of flowers. The famous Bomi Peach Blossom Valley extends for kilometers, where massive, wild peach trees bloom in varying shades of pink against the backdrop of snowy mountains. For those seeking the earliest signs of spring, Yigong offers a rare spectacle where golden rapeseed flowers bloom alongside peach blossoms, creating a stunning color contrast that arrives weeks earlier than in other regions.
Summer (June to August)
Summer transforms the region into a lush, green sanctuary, often referred to as the "Oxygen Bar of Tibet." Although this is the rainy season, the precipitation fills the valleys with mist, giving the forests a mystical atmosphere. It is the perfect time to visit Lulang Forest (en route to Bomi) and to experience the harvest of Matsutake mushrooms or try horseback riding and archery on the flower-carpeted alpine meadows near Lulang Town.
Autumn (September to October)
As the monsoon rains fade, autumn paints the forests of Bomi in a brilliant palette of gold, amber, and crimson. The visibility during these months is exceptional, offering the best chances to see the sharp peak of Mount Namjagbarwa and the glaciers in high definition. The Peach Blossom Valley is also stunning in autumn, with its colorful foliage reflecting in the river.
Winter (November to February)
Forget the myth that you cannot visit Tibet in winter. In Bomi, winter is the season of crystal clarity and secret treasures. With high sun exposure and crisp air, it is the only time to witness the spectacular "Blue Ice" phenomenon at the Laigu Galcier Groups and Midui Glacier, where the frozen ice glows with a translucent sapphire hue. It is also a hidden paradise for bird watchers, as the rare Black-necked Cranes and other migratory birds gather in the wetlands of Yigong to overwinter in the peaceful silence of the valley.

Where to Stay in Bomi
Sunrise over Bomi County
Toilet Facilities at a Hotel in Ranwu Town
-
Travelers exploring the remote eastern Himalayas are often pleasantly surprised by the sophistication of hospitality in Bomi. Over the years, the region has developed a robust tourism infrastructure that extends far beyond basic guesthouses. Whether you are staying in the Bomi County seat or the smaller town of Ranwu, you can expect a level of comfort that defies the remote location.
Bomi County Seat & Surroundings
As the main hub, Bomi County offers the widest range of accommodation, from chain hotels to high-end boutique lodges. Modern amenities are standard here; travelers can expect spacious rooms equipped with floor heating and 24-hour hot water to combat the chill. Crucially, many hotels now feature diffused oxygen supply systems or in-room oxygen concentrators, ensuring a restful night's sleep and helping you acclimatize effortlessly.
Ranwu & Yigong:
Even in more secluded areas like Ranwu Town or the Yigong Village, the accommodation options have seen significant upgrades. In Ranwu, visitors can find quality hotels offering snow-mountain-view rooms with private bathrooms and heating, allowing you to wake up to the sunrise without sacrificing comfort. These establishments provide a warm, cozy base for your adventures into the glaciers and forests.

Useful Bomi Travel Notes
- 1. Tibet Travel Permit Required
All non-Chinese passport holders must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit (also called Tibet Entry Permit) before entering Tibet, and additional permits may be required for certain areas due to its proximity to international borders. At Tibet Discovery, we handle all permit applications for our clients, so you don’t need to worry about the paperwork. - 2. Altitude Considerations
Bomi is one of the most comfortable zones in Tibet, with an average altitude of around 2,700 meters—lower than both Lhasa and Nyingchi. This makes it an oxygen-rich haven for acclimatization. However, you will cross higher passes (like Sejila Pass at 4,728m) to get here, so maintaining a relaxed pace is still advised. - 3. What to Pack and Wear
Dressing in layers is essential because temperatures can fluctuate sharply between the warm valleys and the cool mountain passes. Even in cooler weather, the high-altitude UV radiation is intense, especially when reflected off the white snow of the glaciers. So high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses are strictly necessary. We also recommend bringing a lightweight rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
How to Plan A Bomi Tour
Bomi, known as the “Glacier Capital,” offers a serene escape in the eastern Himalayas. To truly appreciate its primeval forests, seasonal colors, and icy peaks without rushing, we recommend allocating 1 to 2 days here.
