Nyingchi Railway Station serves as the gateway to one of Tibet’s most breathtaking regions, often called the “Switzerland of Tibet” for its lush forests, stunning valleys, and temperate climate. Opened in June 2021 as part of the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway, this modern station has made exploring southeastern Tibet more accessible. The following guide provides essential information about the railway routes and practical transportation options to help you plan your journey.
Nyingchi Railway Station Train Route - 2025.11 Updated
Currently, Nyingchi Railway Station operates exclusively on the Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway Line, which will eventually become part of the larger Sichuan-Tibet Railway, connecting Chengdu to Lhasa. The journey between Lhasa and Nyingchi takes approximately 3.5 to 5.5 hours, covering 435 kilometers through some of Tibet’s most spectacular scenery.
Train schedules between Lhasa and Nyingchi are currently limited, with typically only 1 high-speed train and 1 normal train per day, and these don’t always align conveniently with typical tour itineraries. However, if your schedule allows, the high-speed train experience is worth considering. The Lhasa-Nyingchi railway is an engineering marvel. It’s one of the most challenging high-altitude rail lines ever built, crossing multiple mountain ranges and the Yarlung Tsangpo River. The journey takes you through landscapes including deep valleys, snow-capped peaks, and traditional Tibetan villages. Large windows in the trains offer excellent views. It’s a comfortable way to travel while experiencing Tibet’s incredible scenery from a unique perspective.

Nyingchi Travel Tips
1. Best Time to Visit Nyingchi: Nyingchi is beautiful from March through November, with each season offering unique attractions. Spring (March to May) is the most popular time, especially during the Peach Blossom Festival in late March and early April when valleys burst into pink blooms. Summer (June to August) brings lush greenery and pleasant temperatures, while autumn (September to November) offers crystal-clear skies and the best views of Mount Namjagbarwa. Winter can be quite cold with limited services.
2. Tibet Travel Permit Required: All non-Chinese passport holders must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit (also called Tibet Entry Permit) before entering Tibet, and additional permits may be required for certain areas due to its proximity to international borders. At Tibet Discovery, we handle all permit applications for our clients, so you don’t need to worry about the paperwork.
3. Altitude Considerations: While Nyingchi sits at a relatively comfortable 3,000 meters, you’ll pass through higher elevations like Mila Pass (5,013 meters) when traveling from Lhasa. Stay well-hydrated, avoid strenuous activity on your first day, and consider bringing altitude sickness medication as a precaution.
4. Journey Preparation: The journey between Lhasa and Nyingchi takes several hours, so bring snacks, water, and entertainment for the ride. Layer your clothing as temperatures can vary, and pack rain gear if traveling in summer when afternoon showers are common.

Nyingchi deserves more than just a quick stopover. To truly appreciate this region’s natural beauty and allow your body to adjust to the altitude, we recommend spending at least two full days here, with an extra day for acclimatization if you’re arriving directly from lower elevations.
