How to Get from Lhasa to Kathmandu

Tibet and Nepal are both two amazing tourist destinations with great plateau views and strong Buddhist fragrance. In fact, Lhasa-Kathmandu flight is the only international flights connecting Tibet with other countries, and it is also considered as one of the most beautiful air routes in the world flying over several breathtaking mountains, including Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Lhotse and other peaks in ranges ofHimalayan. Usually, there are 1~2 daily non-stop flights connecting Lhasa with Kathmandu. One is flight CA407, operated by Air China, taking off from Lhasa Gonggar Airport at 11:50 (Beijing time) and landing on Tribhuvan International Airport at 11:10 (local time) every day. On Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the other flight 3U8719 operated by Sichuan Airlines, starts from Lhasa at 11:15(Beijing time) and lands on Kathmandu at 10:30(local time). Within 95 minutes, travelers are able to arrive in Kathmandu from Lhasa by flight.

Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Driving

Apart from taking flight, overland driving is also a good way to transfer to Kathmandu from Lhasa. Because the earthquake shocked Nepal and the road was destroyed, the Zhangmu Port, once serving for traveler traveling between Tibet and Nepal, was closed in 2015, and flight became the only transportation. Since 30th, August, 2017, Gyirong Port has been open for foreign travelers, and travelers can enter Nepal from Tibet by land directly again.

Driving from Lhasa to Kathmandu directly needs about two days. Before transferring to Gyirong Port, you can have a great sightseeing tour on the road through Gyantse and Shigatse. On the journey, you can enjoy the stunning natural landscape as well as holy Buddhist monasteries. If you want, it is also available to extend your tour to Mount Everest which is also in Shigatse and need two more day. Then you will get Gyirong Port and cross the border to Nepal. After that, you still need to drive l to Kathmandu and the journey takes about 8 hours. The landscape is also stunning and you can feast your eyes as well.

Lhasa to Kathmandu Train

There is no available train between Lhasa and Kathmandu at present, but traveling from Lhasa to Kathmandu by train will come true in the future. The Investigation Report of Feasibility of China Nepal Railway and the Belt and Road China and Nepal Co-building pointed out the urgency of its construction. It is also reported that the Lhasa-Kathmandu Railway includes two sections – Lhasa-Gyirong Railway and Gyirong-Kathmandu Railway. The railway to Kathmandu is planned as an extension of Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Currently, Qinghai-Tibet Railway (connecting Xining and Lhasa) is extended to Shigatse and Lhasa-Shigatse train is under operation. With the accomplishment of Lhasa Kathmandu Railway, there will more good choices to transfer between Lhasa and Nepal.

Lhasa to Kathmandu Cycle

Lhasa to Kathmandu Bus

There once was direct international bus running between Lhasa and Kathmandu via Zhangmu Port on every Friday. During the peak seasons, there was an additional bus available on Tuesday. The whole journey took over 2 days, and the buses would make stop for food, accommodation or rest. After the earthquake, the buses were canceled and you can only book the driving service from the local travel agency like Tibet Discovery for an overlanding transportation. It is also available to book a car service to Gyirong Port. After crossing the border, you can take a bus to Kathmandu which costs you about 2,500 Nepalese Rupees (about 25USD).

How to Plan a Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Tour

Tips for Getting from Lhasa to Kathmandu

High Altitude Sickness Tips: During your overland trip, the altitude keeps increasing gradually. You are suggested to spend several days’ time to explore Lhasa city and acclimatize your body to the high altitude.

Road Condition: The road condition in Tibet is relatively good, but you need to drive along with winding and steep roads for better scenery sometimes. The road linking Gyirong Port and Kathmandu is narrow, and the driving speed is rather low for safety.

Food Supply: You’d better bring some water and food with you. The car will stop for lunch, but the food offered in the roadside restaurants does not taste good usually.

Nepal Visa: Nepal Visa is required for all foreign nationals (except for Indian nationals) who enter the land of Nepal. A visa upon arrival for Nepal is possible for USA, UK, Australia and Canada passport holder. Only taking a flight you can obtain a visa upon arrival.

Necessary Permits: Tibet Travel Permit is a must to travel to or in Tibet. Besides, Tibet Border Pass is also necessary, because you need to cross the border between Tibet and Nepal
